How to Perform Istikhara Before Marriage: A Complete Guide

February 14, 2026

Among the most beautiful gifts the Prophet ﷺ left this ummah is the practice of istikhara — turning to Allah before the most important decisions of your life and asking Him to guide you toward what is good. The Prophet ﷺ said: "If one of you is concerned about a matter, let him pray two rak'ahs of non-obligatory prayer, then say..." (Bukhari) He ﷺ then taught the du'a of istikhara in full — a supplication that is remarkable in its honesty and trust. You are not asking Allah to confirm what you already want. You are genuinely asking Him to choose for you. ──────────────────── HOW TO PERFORM ISTIKHARA 1. Make wudu (ablution) and intend to pray two rak'ahs of voluntary prayer (not fard or sunnah mu'akkadah) for the purpose of istikhara. 2. Pray two rak'ahs. In the first, after Al-Fatiha, it is recommended to recite Surah Al-Kafirun. In the second, Surah Al-Ikhlas — though any recitation is valid. 3. After the salah, recite the du'a of istikhara: "Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi 'ilmika, wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika, wa as'aluka min fadlika al-'azim. Translation: "O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, and I seek power through Your power, and I ask of Your great bounty. You have power, I have none. And You know, I know not. You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if in Your knowledge, this matter is good for me in my deen, my livelihood, and my affairs, near and far, then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if in Your knowledge, this matter is evil for me in my deen, my livelihood, and my affairs, near and far, then turn it away from me, and turn me away from it. And ordain for me the good wherever it be, and make me content with it." When reaching the words "this matter," direct your thoughts to the specific decision — in this case, your marriage to this person. ──────────────────── WHEN TO PERFORM ISTIKHARA Istikhara is performed when you are seriously considering a marriage but have not yet made a final decision. It is not a replacement for due diligence — learning about the person's character, meeting their family, consulting your wali, or having the important conversations. It is a supplement to all of that. The istikhara may be performed more than once. There is no fixed number. Some scholars suggest performing it seven times if you do not feel clarity after the first. ──────────────────── COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS You do not need a dream for istikhara to "work." The majority of scholars do not require a dream as a sign. Istikhara is an act of tawakkul — entrusting the matter to Allah. The result may come as a sense of ease or difficulty in proceeding, as events that open or close doors, or simply as ongoing clarity in your heart. Istikhara is not a guarantee. It is a trust. You ask Allah to guide the outcome. You then proceed, make your decision, and trust that what follows is what He decreed for you — and that in His knowledge, it is the best thing for you. Istikhara does not override your own judgment. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Tie your camel, then put your trust in Allah." You still need to investigate, ask questions, and use your reason. Istikhara is the du'a of a person who has already used their 'aql (reason) and now places the rest in Allah's hands. ──────────────────── A DU'A TO READ BEFORE BEGINNING YOUR SEARCH Before beginning the search for a spouse, a beautiful practice is to make sincere du'a: "O Allah, grant me a spouse who is good for my deen, my character, and my future. Guide me to them, and bless our union with sakina, mawaddah and rahmah." There is no specific wording required — speak to Allah in your own language, with sincerity.
