Financial Conversations Before Marriage
September 10, 2026
Financial compatibility is not about comparing incomes. It is about whether two people share a similar picture of how money will work once they are married: who manages daily expenses, whether finances are joint or separate, how much support (if any) goes to parents, and what a reasonable wedding budget looks like.
Couples who avoid this conversation until after marriage often find that they were not actually disagreeing about money — they were disagreeing about values that money happens to make visible: independence, family obligation, risk tolerance, generosity. Naming these expectations early, calmly, and without judgment turns a potentially tense topic into simply one more thing you now understand about each other.
A good marker: if you can describe your expectations around finances as comfortably as you can describe your expectations around where you'll live, you are ready to have this conversation with someone you are seriously considering.
